2013 Brevet Season

The 2013 local brevet series wound to a close Memorial Day weekend.  This year’s series will be remembered for adverse weather conditions on virtually every ride.  Randonneuring by KCMBC members is summarized as follows:

200k – Lenexa to Princeton (3/23/13):  This one was proof that end of March is still winter.  Temperatures hovered in the mid-thirties the entire ride with heavy snow developing in the afternoon.

                  Greg Pottorff - 9:53

                  Karen Winterhalter – 9:53

                  Mark Horn – dnf

                  Mitchell Williams – dnf

                  David Mathews – dnf

300k – Oak Grove to Fayette (4/6/13): 30 MPH cross winds made for one of the slowest 300k rides on record.  The only good thing about being out so long after dark is that the wind eventually let-up.

                  Greg Pottorff – 16:33

                  Karen Winterhalter – 16:33

                  David Mathews – 18:50

Fleche – Lenexa, Beto Junction, Drexel (4/1913):  A rather relaxed team event with frequent stops for food.  Lots of clothes required as temperatures dropped to lower thirties during the night.

                  Greg Pottorff – 366k in 24:00

                  Karen Winterhalter – 366k in 24:00

                  David Mathews – 366k in 24:00

400k – Liberty to Davis City, IA (4/27/13):  Rumor is that this route has 11,000 ft. of climbing.  Riders got the added challenge of 46 degree rain for the first 3 hours.

                  Greg Pottorff – 19:50

                  Karen Winterhalter – 19:50

                  David Mathews – 19:50

200k – Ames, IA, Triple Dip North (5/11/13):  Glad to be riding with good group of Iowa riders that knew how to draft as most of the day was spent riding into 35 MPH headwinds.

                  David Mathews – 9:53

1000k – LaJunta, CO to Kansas City (5/25/13):  Constant 30+ MPH cross winds, even at night (and yes there was a lot of night riding).  Weather finally changed during the last 30 miles as riders finished in the Memorial Day thunderstorm.  Reports are that the little bike drafted the big bike the whole way.

                  Greg Pottorff – 70:11

                  Karen Winterhalter – 70:11

                  David Mathews – 70:11

A big thanks to long time KCMBC member and Kansas City Regional Brevet Administrator, Bob Burns, for his work in organizing the Kansas City brevet series.
