Jesse Blancarte Time Trial

Published on 7/3/2013

It was a good day to bring your aero gear to the airport.  The more, the better.  A 20mph south wind made the Gardner course three miles of joy, followed by three miles of absolute suffering.

This event also offered the Eddie Merckx division (no aero equipment allowed) which led to several people comparing their times to see how much of a difference the aero gear makes.  The verdict:  Full aero gear saves you minutes and wattage in a 10k time trial.  (In the interests of full disclosure, the Merckx race was the last race of the day, so tiredness may have contributed some to the time difference.)

Kyle competed in the Cat. 4 race and posted a time of 15:05, good for 6th.  The top four finishers in this race were decked in full aero gear, including aero bars, aero frames, deep dish or disc wheels, aero helmets, and several in skinsuits, and they have the finishing times to show for it.  If you want to win a non-Merckx time trial, it's a good idea to join in on the aero gear arms race.

Kyle:  6th / 10, Cat. 4
